     Their families were descendants of
French Huguenots who fled from France to England and then to America. They were prusecuted because they were Protestants. This story has been passed down through oral tradition. Notes for Abishai Merchant:
Notes from Dana Padgett (d9999_@hotmail.com): He was of

The following is from handwritten notes in the Edgartown Historical Society; Plymouth Colony Records Vol. 5, p. 43: July 5, 1670, " Abishai Marchant, for being found to be in bed with Mary the wife of Morgan Jones, was fined the sume of 40s to the use of the Collonie." Annals of Yarmouth, Vol. 2. p. 195: April 26, 1676, Abishai Marchant of Yarmouth " rated L1:15:3, towards the charge of the late was." Evidently Abishai neglected to show up for duty and subsequently was
fined. In the book "History of Barnstable County", "Annals of Yarmouth" pages 195-195. "towards to late war", shows both the tax-paying inhabitants at this date, and their comparative wealth. We retain order of names, inasmuch as it probably indicates neighborhood. Abishai Marchant, 1.15. 3, he appears 28th on the list in the first colum, between Anthony Fry and Mr. Sunderland. Abishai's father John appears in the second column, second to last on the list. John Marchant, 2.11 ( Dana Padgett states that John is the father of Abishai as he is not dead until 1693, and son John b. 1679/80, of Abishai would have been too young.)

In the year 1643 an official canvass of every town in Plymouth Colony was made, to find the men, between the ages of sixteen and sixty years, who were able to bear arms. These lists are preserved in the Plymouth Records, but I have not thought best to insert them here, as the men were not properly soldiers.
In 1643, a more compact and responsible military organization was established in the three towns, Plymouth, Duxbury, and Marshfield. While a careful canvass of the colony was made that year, and account taken of every man "able to bear arms," this company was made up of chosen men, and was independent. None were received unless they were freemen, honest, and of good repute, and by the election of the members of the company. Training exercises were begun and ended with prayer. Strict order was enjoined, and any infringement of rules was punished with dismission from the company. Each man, upon election, must provide himself with a musket or sword, rest, bandoleers, etc. Only one third of whole company were allowed to carry pikes. The following rules were in force:
"All who are elected chief officers in this military company shall be so titled and forever afterwards so reputed, except he obtain a higher place. That every man enlisted in this company shall pay sixpence a quarter for the use of the company. That when any one of this company dies, the company shall come together with their armes, upon warning, and 'interr his corps' as a soldier, and according to his place and quality. All must take the oath of fidelity before admission to the company. All postures of pike and muskett, motions rankes and files, &c., messengers, skirmishes, sieges, batteries, watches, sentinells, &c., must be always performed according to true military discipline."

The officers appointed over this company were,

Capt. Myles Standish,
Lieut. Nathl Thomas,
Nathl. Souther, Clark,
Matthew Fuller, | sergeants.
Samuel Nash, |
(Listed is John MARCHANT of Yarmouth, 1670)

33.  Sarah //, born Abt. 1595 in ENGLAND; died December 03, 1638 in MA..

Notes for John Merchant II:
JOHN MARCHANT Born 1600, died prob. bef. 1670; married SARAH (d. Dec. 3, 1638);
Feb. 24, 1638/9, there was granted 8 acres for himself and another male at
Mount Wollaston, Braintree, MA.;
June 2, 1638, admitted inhabitant of Newport, R. I. There was a William Merchant of Watertown, MA., 1641, and John removed there prob. in 1642 and was there, 1645; removed to Yarmouth, MA., bef. 1648 and June 7, 1648, was chosen constable there.
John prob. died prior to 1670, when his married son John was promoted from ensign to lieut. in militia and was called "Senior". Bibliography: History of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., by Charles Edward Banks, M.D., 1911, Vol. 2, pp. 77-79 and Vol. 3, pp. 291-97.

(It is recorded in one source that)... JOHN MARCHANT the emigrant was descended from John Marchant and Joan Surbridge, who were married in Oxted, Surrey, July 14, 1566. He came from England to Newport, R. I., where he was an inhabitant June 2, 1638. He died prior to 1670, at which time his son John was called Senior. Other children are unknown.

Although it is unclear as to exactly when John came to this country, it is certain he was here before 1625, as this is when his son John was born in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts.

There are two different references to "Captain Marchant", both of which place him in Virginia between 1619-1621, in the P.R.O., England.
The first is a letter to Sir Edward Sandies in England from John Rolf "...a Dutch Man of Warr in the burden of 160 tones arrived at Point Comfort, the Commandors name Capt. Jope. He brought not anything but 20 odd Negroes, which we the Governor and Capt. Marchant bought for victualls * at the best and easier rate they could". (*whereof he was in great need as he pretended)
The second in the book, "Newes from Virginia", by John Smith. This is an excert of the book, page 70:
..."As yet, we have no houses to cover us, our tents were rotten, and our Cabbins were then nought: our heat commoditie was
ypon which we made chissels, the president and Capt. Martin's sickness constreyed me to be Caoe Marchant, and yet to spare no pains in making houses for the company, ----"

This is an article written by the New England Historical Society, "New England's Colonial Wars", A Consice History 1521-1775 by James R. Brann. F.A.C.G. It lists Major Colonies and their dates, 1620 Plymouth Bay Colony, 1626 Massachusetts Bay Colony. Given this time frame, perhaps this Capt. Marchant was our John Marchant, who very possible migrated northward.

!"Gordon B. Hinckley, Shoulder for the Lord" by George M. McCune page 35- " Two of the early immigrants to Plymouth colony were Gabriel Wheldon, of Arnold, Nottingham, England, and his brother (name unknown). Gabriel had been married in England before sailing to America but his first wife named Margaret evidentally was deceased at the time of his migration.
Both brothers had a free spirit much like Staphen Hopkins and found their way to the camps of the Wampanoags. There they both fell in love with two of the daughters of chief Quadequina, younger brother of the Great Chief. They each married and Gabriel gave his second wife the English name 'Margaret' after his first spouse. The two counseled with their father-in-law and his older brother Massasoit regarding what to do. The Plymouth Colony would probably punish them for their intermarriage. Massasoit advised them to return to the colyn and all would be well.
The Plymouth Colony tribunals saved face by banishing the couples from Plymouth for life but did not send them back to England. Gabriel and Margaret established their home in Barnstable where the Hinckleys came in late 1630's and here Gabriel and Margaret raised a large family of girls.
One of these was Catherine "Catone" Wheldon who married Stephen Hopkins' oldest son Giles on October 9, 1639. Giles had been given the home his father had build in Yarmouth and the couple established their home and raised four children there. When Giles' father Stephen passed away about July 1644, his father left an estate....

Notes for John Marchant:
From research of Bruce & Carol Hayward, from their notes of Jerry Bird: This family hails from the Island of Guernsey, Channel Islands, UK. We are direct descendants of Peter Le Marchant who died in 1335. Peter was the Lieutenant Governor and Bailiff of the
Island of Guernsey early in the fourteenth century. In 1689, a petition for recording the descent and genealogy of the Le Marchants in the Court of Hearaldy, was made and granted. Three brothers, descendants of this family came to America. They settled on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in the 1600's. John was required, along with two other men to produce one pair of Almain Rivetts; he was keeper of the poor. Almain Rivetts was light armour made flexible by overlapping plates sliding on rivets. They were guards for the elbows, which would account for the pairs. They were invented in Germany (hence "Allmain" - "allemand").

My Great-Great-GreatGrandmother
Rebecca Marchant
Born March 23, 1748
in Frederick Co., VA.
Died July 15, 1829
in Clark Co., IN.
In 1755 Rebecca Marchant was living in Berkeley Co.,WV., then known as Frederick Co.,VA. when Col. Braddock's Troup passed the Opeckon Creek and the drains of Mill Creek on her father's land. She was seven when she heard the guns of Braddock's defeat.  After her husband died in 1812,she went to live with her daughter, Rebecca Akin. Her death has been given as July 15,1815 in some publications but according to three different family Bible records the correct date should be July 15,1829. Jennie Murray Stewart had her date correct in her composition notebook, but in her 23 page book she wrote 1815. I think she just mistyped having the number 15 on her mind. So many people have quoted her on the date, that there are lots of publications with the wrong date; including DAR & SAR applications. For more about her life please refer to my Stewart homepage under James Stewart, Jr.
