In addition to the education received at the common schools, our subject in 1852, began a course at the State University at Bloomington, and from there he came to Carlisle and clerked for his father, remaining there about one year. He then returned to Bloomington, where his father was engaged in business, and assisted him for about two years, after which he located at Ellettsville, in Monroe County, and managed a store for six months. He then began for himself in the hardware, queensware and commission business, the firm being Dunn & Akin, but in the spring of 1857 he sold out and went to Minnesota, where he engaged in the land and loan business. In 1859, he returned to Monroe County, and bought a store belonging to his father and moved it to Carlisle, under the firm name of Akin & Bro., which was the foundation of the present well known firm of R. W. Akin's Sons. In 1860, they sold out to their father, and in 1861, our subject enlisted in Company C, Fifty-ninth Regiment Indinaa Volunteer Infantry, and was soon elected First Lieutenant, which position he held throughout his term of service. He was in the siege of New Madrid, Island No.10, Tiptonville, Corinth, Jackson, Vicksburg, Mission Ridge, Raymond, Champion Hills, Atlanta, etc. At Etowah, Ga., he resigned his commission and returned to Calisle, taking an interest with his father in the mercantile business, which continued about two years, when the firm was changed. Notes for William Marchant Akin,Jr.:
He was known as "Billy". B.S. & A.M. from DePauw Univ.Class of 1878 -" DePauw Univ. Alumnal Record". He was three times Mayor of Evansville, 1897-1901. His obituary in the New Albany Weekly states that he died of bronchitis that was brought on originally by his strenuous efforts and the incident exposure while making the canvas when a candidate for the Mayor of Evansville on the Democratic ticket. At the time of his death he was largely engaged in various enterprises, being the head of the Akin Packing Co.
The following from the Source: Biographical Cyclopedia of Vanderburgh County, Indiana c. 1897 P. 124-125:
One little expects to find startling incidents in the life of a merchant, but he fails to comprehend the forces which contribute to the advancement of the moral, social and political interests of our people who leaves the careful business man out of his reckonings. No history of Vanderburgh county would be complete that did not mention the part William M. Akin, Jr., has already played in public affairs, to say nothing of the possibilities of the future, even beyond his term of service as mayor of Evansville, which does not expire until April, 1899. His boyhood days were that of a typical Hoosier boy of the present and the immediate past. He was born December 31, 1855, at Carlisle, Indiana, and his elementary education was obtained from the district schools. He was ambitious and determined to seek a higher education than the common schools afforded, and in 1873, he entered the old Asbury. College, now DePauw University, and was graduated in 1878.
While earnest and persistent in the prosecution of his studies, his cordiality and social disposition gained him wide popularity among his fellow students. These qualities supported by magnificent physical proportions gained him a leadership in college affairs. At the same time his methods and applications in study, supplemented by his facile comradeship with members of the faculty, furnished him with unusual breadth of qualification for executive work.
In 1865 Mr. Akin came to Evansville and in 1878 became a member of the firm of William Akin & Son, engaged in the pork packing business and the success of the concern, under the guiding hands of his father and himself, has been very gratifying and its operations have extended far and near. The house has a reputation for honesty and fair dealing second to nine in the country. ,Mr. Akin has always affiliated with. the democratic party and has been unswerving. in his devotion to the interests thereof.
Prior to his election as Mayor of Evansville, he never held public office, with the exception of two terms as school trustee under the administration of Mayor Hawkins, which place he resigned to accept the nomination of mayor. A man of his intelligence and ability could not, however, keep out of public life and he was induced to make the race for mayor of Evansville in the last campaign and was elected by the overwhelming majority of 2,785 Votes. His administration has been highly creditable, evincing devotions to the interests of the city and comprehensive knowledge of its wants. He is prompt and untiring in his efforts to serve all with equability and without distinction, and in his daily administration is proving the wisdom of his constituents who placed him at the head of the municipal government of Evansville. Personally Mayor Akin is so genial in his manners, that whenever required to display forte and resolution of purpose, he shows so much suavity and tact that he disarms criticism. He seldom offends and never loses a friendship once formed, socially or politically. His rapid advancement in public life has made no change in that modest, quiet demeanor, which characterized him as a business man before political honors were conferred on him. He is too level-headed to be puffed up by prosperity. His comprehension of human nature and keen incite into motive as the mainspring of human action, and his adaptability, without surrender of dignity or self-respect, qualify him in a high degree for success as an executive officer. Though strong in his views and independent in action he is careful not to offend others by pushing his opinions upon them.
William Akin, Sr., (father) is a native of Indiana, having been born in 1828. He married Miss Mary Davis, and to them seven children were born, the subject of this sketch being the third. As a business man and public spirited citizen, Mr. William Akin, Sr., has no superior. He is a man of sterling integrity and one who is loved, honored and respected by his fellowmen. Few men have had as successful a career. He is a man of discretion and pronounced virtues. He is well informed, beloved by his friends and respected by the community on account of his generosity, congenial manner and high integrity.
William M. Akin, Jr., is a member of the Knights of Pythias and of the B.P.0.E. His convictions of duty are strong and unyielding. His activity is intense and unremitting whether in the prosecution of his private business or in the discharge of public trust. During the entire period of his residence in town, Mr. Akin has been eminently identified with many of the public enterprises which have affected favorably the growth and improvement of Evansville. He is in all the essentials of good citizenship - a leading and valuable citizen.
He was united in marriage 1886, to Miss Tillie Schlueter, a native of Illinois, but a resident of Evansville since childhood. Their union has been blessed with five children, four of whom survive.

Notes for Carrie Akin:
Birth & death date taken from stone at Fairview Cem. DePauw Family plot. Tallest monument in the cemetery of Washington Charles DePauw 1822-1887. At one time had lake in front of steps leading to plot. Obituary: New Albany Weekly Tribune Nov. 11,1904 p.7 col.3. Mrs. Carrie Aiken DePauw, wife of Mr. Newland T. DePauw, died Sunday morning at 1:15 o'clock at the family residence, 1015 East Main street, after an illness of nearly one year of lung trouble. Early last summer she was taken to Camp DePauw, near Woodruff,Wis., where she remained for several months. The change of climate did not bring the desired results and her condition became worse as the summer advanced and she was brought home last month. For the past few days she had been slowly sinking and death was expected at any moment.
Mrs. DePauw was forty-six years old and was born at Evansville, where she was married to Mr. DePauw. Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Misses Katherine and Jane DePauw. She is also survived by her father, William Aiken; three brothers, J.W. Aiken,Ransom Aiken and Former Mayor William E. Aiken, of Evansville, and one sister, Mrs. Wilbur F. Erskine, all of Evansville.
She was a member of Trinity M.E. church and was president of the ladies aid society of that church for many years. She was also president of the board of lady managers of the United Charities, a benevolent institution established by the late Washington C. DePauw, father of Mr. Newland T. DePauw, and which was maintained under the provisions of his will. Mrs. DePauw was always active in the religious and charitable work of the church and was a liberal contributor to the benevolences. Her charming disposition and kindliness of heart and her most agreeable personality had endeared her to the community where she made her home since her marriage.
The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the residence. The Rev. Albert Hurlstone, formerly pastor of Trinity M.E. church, now pastor of Roberts Park church at Indianapolis, and the Rev. J.W. Duncan, the present pastor of Trinity M.E. church, conducted the services. A double quartet from the Treble Clef Club, of which Mrs. DePauw was a member, sang two selections,"Lead,Kindly Light" and "Abide With Me." The remains were lead to rest at Fairview cemetery. The pallbearers were John S. McDonald, Walter B. Creed, Lewis R. Stoy, N.B. Boilvin, Judge Alexander Dowling and Henry E. Jewitt.

Notes for Newland Talbot DePauw:
Obituary: New Albany Weekly Ledger Sept. 17, 1913 p.5 col.5
The community was stunned Monday morning by the announcement that Newland Talbot DePauw had suddenly died this morning of a stroke of apoplexy at his summer home at Haymarket,Va., where he owned a fine estate of 1,000 acres which he managed during the summer months with much sucess. Mr. DePauw had no premonitory illness and seemed to be in his usual health when he retired Sunday night and his death was a terrible shock to his family. He died at 5:30 this morning.
He was born in Salem in 1856 and at 5 years came to this city with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Washington DePauw. He received his early education here, later attended DePauw University and after that a military school in the East. During his father's life he was identified with that remarkable man's enterprises and at the time of his death was interested in many home enterprises. His family has always been a notable one in the history of the State and in this it held true to its traditions brought from the great Flemish city of Ghent, in Belgium, where the family occupied a patrician position.
The deceased, like his ancestors, took a prominent part in the activities of the community and State, although he never engaged in politics, but put his energies into the promotion of commercial and manufacturing enterprises. He was also deeply interested in the religious side of life. He was director in the New Albany National Bank, the New Albany Veneer Co., the American Plate Glass Co. of Pittsburg, the Surety Life Insurance Co. of Chicago and President of the New Albany Manufacturing Co. He was a large holder of real estate in this city and Louisville.
He was a member of Trinity M.E. church, a trustee of the DePauw University and president of the Board of Conference Claimants and Preachers Aid of the Indiana Conference. At the last general conference of the Methodist Church, he was one of the two lay delegates from Indiana. He was member of Jefferson Lodge of Masons, of New Albany Chapter,R.A.M., Indiana Council, R.S.M., and of New Albany Commandery Knights Templar and of New Albany Lodge of Elks. While W. T. Durbin was governor of Indiana, Mr. DePauw served upon his staff with the rank of colonel.
He is survived by his widow who was with him at Haymarket, when the end came, and two daughters, Mrs. E.V. Knight, of this city, and Mrs. A.J. Gates, of Louisville; and one sister, Mrs. Charles Seamon, of Los Angeles. For eight years Mr. DePauw had made his place at Haymarket, his summer home having purchased the estate of Dr. Jenney, the inventor of the Jenney coupler and during the winter he spent much time here. His intention had been to leave Haymarket today for New Albany and he was preparing to spend the winter season here when death stepped in and crossed his plans. The intention is to bring the remains for interment in the family lot in Fairview cemetery, but no arrangements have been made.
All who knew Mr. DePauw held him in the highest esteem and his death will leave a large space to be filled in the enterprises in all directions which affect the life of the community. Mr. DePauw was a commanding figure in both the material and deeper interests of this city and his death will be widely mourned. The highest testimonial that can be paid a man is the voice of the public, with whom he has been associated, in his praise and surely there have been nothing but words of regret and sorrow spoken in this city on the death of Mr. DePauw. He had endeared himself to all with whom he had met and many people here were his old acquantances, to whom his passing away came as a personal sorrow. It is well with the man for whom such a feeling exists. It is something which neither wealth nor high position can procure, but which comes to kindness and character, as their highest tribute.
