Generation No. 1

1.  Sarah Clack, ( my 3rd great-grandmother) born 1767 in
Albemarle Co.,VA.; died Bef. 1827 in Barren Co.,KY..  She was the daughter of 2. Moses Clack and 3. Susannah H. Thomson.  She married (1) George Woods Berry December 21, 1787 in Albermarle Co.,VA..  He was born June 26, 1756 in Albemarle Co.,VA., and died 1849 in Barren Co., KY..  He was the son of Bradley Berry and Ann Wood.

Notes for Sarah Clack:
Nickname Sally.

Notes for George Woods Berry:
From "Times of Long Ago, A History of Barren Co., KY," by Franklin Gorin:
Settlements were made all over the county from 1798 - 1800. Among those persons who located in the immediate vicinity of Glasgow was George Berry.
George Berry settled at a cave springs one and a half miles from Glasgow, nearly opposite the residense of Rev. James Brooks. For a year or two loud exposions frequently occurred in the cave, accompanied by a loud noise like thunder. They were distinctly heard in town, sometimes several in a day, and then again none for weeks and months. Finally they ceased and they never ocurred since 1807 or '08. Diligent search was made to ascertain the cause, but no discoveries were ever made.
From notes by Martha Powell Reneau, this cave is on the farm now (1996) owned by Charles R. Wininger. It is on the farm known as "the old Darter place". It can be reached by driving through Mr. Wininger's farm, or it can be reached from Reynolds Road, although there is no road to it.

George Berry was in Barren Co. by 1802 when he first began paying taxes on 100 acres of second rate land on Beaver Creek. He came from Albermarle Co., VA. On July 26, 1802, he gave power of  attorney to William J. Wood "to sell my interest in two tracts of land in Albermarle Co. in the state of VA., lying and being on the waters of Michams River". At least part of this was land he had bought from his father, Bradley Berry on Sept. 9, 1790, and recorded in Deed Book 10, page 76, Albermarle Co., VA. The power of attorney to William J. Wood is recorded in Deed Book A, page 109, Barren Co., KY. dated July 26, 1802.
George Berry was married in Albermarle Co. on Dec. 21, 1787 to Sarah Clack, daughter of Moses Clack. Her name was misspelled as 'Clark' in the marriage register.
As in so many instances in the early days, the first child of George & Sarah Clack Berry arrived before their marriage. This often happened in sparsely populated areas where a circuit riding preacher was all that was available. The young couple would make their intentions known to their families, and live together as man and wife until the preacher came around again to make it legal. Sometimes he would marry several couples at the same time.

This taken from
arhyanna@powernet.net:
Biography of Jane Bolling (or non-biography as the case may be!)

It is said that Jane Bolling never existed as the daughter of Col. Robert Bolling and Jane Rolfe. According to official records put out by the official researcher's of the Bolling and Rolfe lines, John Bolling, is the only child of Robert and Jane Rolfe. It is speculated however by some of my fellow researcher's that there was a second child and that child was Jane. (Since there isn't a record of what Jane Rolfe died of, could it have been childbirth? If so maybe the child was raised by another family member and that is why there is confusion about her parentage?) Of course Col. Robert remarried Ann Stith and had other children, but Jane is not listed there either.

Jane was born in 1676 (same year that Jane Rolfe died) and married Rev. James Clack about 1695. She is the presumed mother of their children, Capt. James, Dorothy, and Jane. She died on August 24, 1714 in Gloucester, VA. She is presumed buried in the Ware Parish graveyard and possibly somewhere on the church grounds. There is not a known grave for her, but I find it hard to believe that her husband was the parish reverend and she wasn't buried there on the grounds somewhere. It has been suggested that she may also be buried under the church floor, but due to the lack of official record it is all speculation. The records from Ware Parish are few and far between, having been destroyed sometime in the 1800's. I find it interesting that a definate death date exists for her, but not much else.

She died giving childbirth to her daughter Dorothy.
